Tuckshop

The new tuckshop at Woombye State School to meet the growing student staff demand and improves on the menu options, preparation and service quality during break times.

Woombye State School required a new facility for food service and uniform sale to support the growth in student numbers at the school.
To meet the increased demand, the tuckshop required to be a commercial grade kitchen for preparation and cooking, along with a streamlined point of sale system for students and staff. The uniform shop, operated by the tuckshop staff, is required to have increased storage space for the expanded in stock and dedicated change facilities for students.
Our signature visioning process with the school enabled us to fully understand the type of food and drinks service the school aimed to provide for the students and staff, as well as how the point of sale systems should operate during break times. Given site constraints and the limited footprint allocated for the tuckshop, it was critical to carefully design the spatial relationships between storage, preparation, cooking, service and washing zones to maximise workflow and staff circulation.
We streamlined the layout to create a clear and systematic flow from preparation through to cooking and serving. This minimised cross foot traffic and enhanced workplace safety within the kitchen. The service area included three point-of-sale stations, ensuring efficient service for the growing student number.
The design incorporates generous storage throughout the space, including under bench storage at each work zone, replicating a typical commercial kitchen.
The building envelope established a landmark presence within the school campus. The tuckshop and uniform shop are essential facilities supporting daily school life for student, staff and parents. The colour palette pays tribute to neighbouring buildings, while the diagonal cladding and inverted truss roof structure creates a unique identity.
